Yealink W56H DECT Handset Review -- Australia 2026
The W56H is Yealink's DECT cordless handset for offices -- an add-on handset that pairs with the W56P base station or W70B multi-cell DECT base. It is not a standalone phone. If your office already runs a Yealink DECT system and you need additional handsets, the W56H is what you add. Two SIP lines, 1.8-inch display, speakerphone, and a 4-hour talk battery.

What the W56H is (and what it is not)
The W56H is a DECT handset only -- it does not contain a SIP stack, cannot connect directly to a VOIP provider, and cannot function as a standalone phone. It requires a compatible Yealink DECT base station to operate.
DECT is the wireless standard used by cordless office phones -- different from Wi-Fi, it is designed specifically for voice calls with low interference and good range in office environments.
Compatible bases for the W56H include:
Yealink W56P -- the single-cell DECT base for small deployments. The W56P is sold as a bundle (W56P base + W56H handset). Additional W56H handsets can be paired to the same W56P base, up to the base's handset limit.
Yealink W70B -- the multi-cell DECT base for larger deployments. Supports multiple handsets and SIP lines, and extends coverage across multiple base stations for larger office footprints.
Yealink W60B -- an older multi-cell DECT base, also compatible with the W56H.
If you are buying a W56H without already having one of these bases, you need to purchase a base as well. The W56P + W56H bundle is the typical starting point for new DECT deployments.

Who should buy the W56H?
The W56H is the right purchase for businesses that already run a Yealink DECT deployment and need to add handsets. Common scenarios:
Growing headcount -- your business has added staff and needs more cordless handsets for the existing W56P or W70B base.
Multi-zone coverage -- you have a W70B multi-cell base and need handsets in additional areas of the building.
Replacement handset -- a W56H has been lost or damaged and needs replacing without replacing the base.
The W56H is not the right purchase for a business that does not yet have a Yealink DECT base. In that case, start with the W76P (a multi-handset DECT base station) or the W56P bundle (base + one W56H handset included).
For businesses that need cordless phones but do not need the W56H specifically: the W76P is Yealink's current recommended DECT base for most SMB deployments, and it is a complete system -- base + handsets, all included.
Call quality and range
DECT wireless gives the W56H a typical indoor range of 50 metres from the base station, and up to 300 metres outdoors in open space. In a standard office environment -- with walls, furniture, and other wireless devices -- expect reliable coverage within 30-40 metres of the base.
For multi-storey offices or buildings larger than a standard SMB floor plate, a single W56P or W70B base may not cover the full building. The W70B supports additional repeater units to extend coverage, and multiple W70B bases can be configured in a multi-cell cluster for large floor plans.
Call quality on the W56H is consistent with DECT standard voice -- clear audio, low latency, and better interference immunity than Wi-Fi-based cordless phones. HD audio is supported when the base station is connected to a VOIP provider that supports wideband codecs (G.722).
On Australian NBN, the W56H call quality is determined by the W70B or W56P base station's connection to the VOIP provider -- the same configuration considerations apply as for any SIP phone: disable SIP ALG on the router, enable QoS for voice traffic.
W56H vs W76P -- what's the difference?
The W76P is Yealink's current-generation DECT system -- a base station with handsets included. The W56H is just the handset for the older W56P base system.
For a new cordless phone deployment, the W76P is the right starting point. It is a complete system with better specs than the W56P/W56H combination, including longer battery life, improved audio, and support for more handsets per base.
The W56H is the correct purchase if you specifically need to add handsets to an existing W56P or W70B/W60B deployment. If you are starting fresh, buy the W76P rather than building on the older W56P platform.
What works / What doesn't
Pros
Standard DECT quality -- reliable wireless range and interference immunity vs Wi-Fi
Compatible with multiple Yealink bases -- W56P, W70B, W60B
Speakerphone -- handsfree without needing a headset
Lightweight and compact -- comfortable for extended use
GAP/CAT-iq compliant -- interoperable with other DECT brands on compatible bases
Cons
Not a standalone device -- requires a Yealink DECT base to function
Older platform -- the W76P/W78H system is Yealink's current generation for new deployments
4-hour talk time -- adequate for standard office use but short for heavy call-handling roles
Small 1.8" screen -- limited display area for contacts and call info
Australian pricing and where to buy
The W56H is stocked by Digiphone at around $123 AUD per handset. This is the handset only -- no base station is included.
For new deployments, factor in the cost of a W56P base (if starting fresh) or confirm your existing W70B/W60B can accept additional W56H registrations. The W70B supports up to 8 handsets; the W56P supports up to 5 handsets registered to a single base.
Expanding an existing DECT deployment? Get a recommendation for the right configuration.
The W56H is the right purchase if you have an existing Yealink DECT deployment (W56P, W70B, or W60B base) and need to add handsets. It is a solid, standard DECT handset that does its job reliably in a typical office environment.
For a new cordless phone deployment, buy the W76P system instead -- it is Yealink's current-generation DECT platform with better specs. The W56H is an expansion handset for an existing installation, not the starting point for a new one.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Yealink W56H work without a base station?
No. The W56H is a DECT handset only. It does not have its own SIP stack and cannot connect to a VOIP provider directly. It must be paired with a compatible Yealink DECT base station (W56P, W70B, or W60B) to make and receive calls.
Is the Yealink W56H compatible with the W70B?
Yes. The W56H pairs with the Yealink W70B multi-cell DECT base station. If you already run a W70B deployment for other DECT handsets, additional W56H handsets register to the same base. Check the W70B's registered handset limit -- it supports up to 8 handsets per base.
W56H vs W78H -- what is the difference?
The W78H is Yealink's current-generation DECT handset designed for the W76P and W70B base stations. It has a larger screen, longer battery life, and improved audio compared to the W56H. For a new deployment or when replacing ageing handsets, the W78H (part of the W76P system) is the better platform. The W56H remains available for existing W56P deployments.
How many W56H handsets can register to one W56P base?
The Yealink W56P base station supports up to 5 registered DECT handsets. The W56P itself ships with one W56H handset; up to 4 additional W56H handsets can be added. If you need more than 5 handsets, consider upgrading to the W70B multi-cell base, which supports up to 8 handsets and can be extended with additional base stations.
