The basics
A VoIP provider is the company that supplies your business phone service over the internet. Think of it like your internet service provider (ISP) but for phone calls.
Without a VoIP provider, a VoIP phone cannot make or receive calls. When you plug it in, it will display "Not Registered" or a similar error. This is the most common reason businesses end up with a phone that appears to do nothing.
Your VoIP provider gives you a SIP account, which includes a username, password, and server address. These credentials are entered into your phone (or auto-provisioned) to connect it to the phone network.
